An Apology To Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo

Last month I published an editorial inaccurately calling out our Assemblywoman, Pilar Schiavo because a video had been sent to us showing the Assemblywoman dancing with other California State Legislators, supposedly celebrating their defeating a bill that would have stopped the gas tax increase on July 1, 2025.

Before publishing, I checked with several other very reliable sources who confirmed the video was indeed legitimate. I was wrong. My eagerness to show Ms. Schiavo in a bad light was a mistake that shouldn’t have happened. I should have given the Assemblywoman a chance to respond before publishing. Something we try to always do in our attempts to get the story right.

Upon further investigation, we discovered that while the video was legitimate, Ms. Schiavo and her other legislators were celebrating the passage of other bills not related to the gas tax. In fact, Ms. Schiavo had joined the Republicans this time, in voting to stop the gas tax increase.

After publishing, representatives from the Assemblywoman’s office contacted me. We pulled down the editorial and the video while investigating further.

Even though AI technology was not involved in this instance, the current landscape requires we, the media, need to be extra vigilant in accuracy and reporting the truth.

I learned my lesson and I will make certain I and KHTS will take the extra step to make certain our reporting is accurate.

Again, I apologize to our Assemblywoman.

  1. She is still an embrassment to the citizens of California. She needs to go on a Pork Free diet…..,

  2. We need more journalists that are willing to admit when a mistake is made in their reporting. It is appreciated by this reader. But I do take issue with you publishing a comment by a reader calling for the Assemblywoman to be burned to death. C’mon, there’s no place for that here. (Editor’s note: we deleted the comment from Donkey Pox).

  3. Carl, you are an admirable man and I applaud your professionalism. I’ve always admired your dedication to doing the right thing.

  4. The truth matters and good that you did the right thing. I’m not in agreement with many of our assemblywoman’s views, but at the same time I don’t want her portrayed in something that is false. I’m happy that she voted the way she did that sometimes she did so on the behalf of her constituents. I been pleased with Congressman Whitesides in some of the issues he’s been tackling such as infrastructure and energy using hydro as a means of a plausible renewable. That’s a lot for me to admit as an independent Libertarian.

  5. No problem, Carl. Stuff happens. Thanks for correcting the error.

  6. You are truly a man of integrity. I have so much respect for your decision and your publication.

About Carl Goldman

Carl Goldman, along with his wife, Jeri repurchased KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita’s hometown station on October 24, 2003. They owned it from 1990-1998, and then sold it to Clear Channel Communication in 1998, buying it back from Clear Channel in 2003. Since then, they have rebuilt KHTS as a critical voice of the Valley. In 2015 the radio station moved to its new headquarters on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, in the original Newhall Hardware building. In 2018 an FM was added, 98.1, with its signal being simulcast with AM-1220. In January 2020, Carl and Jeri cruised on the Diamond Princess. Carl was one of the first Americans to come down with Covid-19. Months earlier he was impacted by Guillain Barre Syndrome as a result of a Shingles vaccine in September 2019. He is still in recovery from the vaccine.
