More than $10,000 in BMX bicycles, equipment and prizes for a raffle were ransacked from the Santa Clarita BMX Raceway and pro shop Tuesday night or Wednesday morning… A laptop computer that contained racing schedules and the names and addresses of about 1,000 local residents also disappeared from the office in the 21500 block of Centre Pointe Parkway.
The track owners say some of the stolen bikes were routinely lent to children who attended a BMX class through the Santa Clarita Valley Community Center and who could not afford bikes of their own.
Their final meeting, which was scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m., is typically the most highly anticipated; they hold a race and hand out ribbons and certificates.
“Kids without bikes are going to show up and not be able to compete in that day’s event,” said track co-owner Lissa Weeke. “I hope the person who did this realizes their selfishness.”
A qualifier race for the California state BMX racing finals is also set for Saturday. Between 200 and 300 racers are expected to show up, Weeke said. A raffle with prizes that included a Nintendo Gameboy Advance and two new BMX bikes was supposed to be held, but all of the prizes were stolen.
Weeke said the burglars kicked in the window-mounted air conditioner to gain access to the building, and apparently tried on some of the equipment before they absconded it.
Weeke and her husband, Bill, put a lot of their own money into the track, she said. Bill works for Lockheed, but Lissa Weeke said he is expecting to be laid off.
The Weekes bought the raceway because they liked to see children positively interacting and mentoring one another in the sport of biking, Lissa said.
Sheriff’s deputies entered the stolen items into a database and are investigating the theft. The Weekes are offering a reward for information leading to the recovery of the stolen goods or the capture of the thieves — one year of racing and practice at the raceway, and membership to American Bicycle Association, a $2,000 value.
Witnesses or anyone with information can contact Weeke at 252-0828 or the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 255-1121.
