SCV Mining Battle Long from Over

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted (with local supervisor Michael Antonovich among the dissenting votes) to settle a lawsuit with Cemex, a Mexico-based mining company, over a huge mining project in Soledad Canyon….

According to City Spokesperson Gail Ortiz in a live interview on KHTS, the battle over the proposed project, which centers around a 460-acre mass of land in Soledad canyon, has been going on for years.  Santa Clarita residents have no interest in the additional traffic and smog along with the lower land values that would inevitably be the result of the takeover of the land by Cemex.

When surveyors first proposed the site and officials in Washington sat passively as Cemex made progress to move in, they did not realize how close the site was to homes and schools, not to mention how densely populated the neighboring community was and is.  The City of Santa Clarita has now spent over 2.5 million dollars in the fight against Cemex, and continues, as mayor Bob Kellar and other councilmembers garner support from higher officials including Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Diane Feinstein (D-CA).
