Searching for His Killers

Brian Westfall, 28, ordered two pink lemonades at Hooters while his friend enjoyed a few beers. The Valencia film editor took 26-year-old Adam Lokey of Canyon Country to the Santa Monica sports bar Friday night after he learned Lokey had never been there…

A little while later, the two friends ducked into Brian’s red 1988 Toyota MR2 for the last time. A hit-and-run driver killed Westfall and maimed Lokey before they reached Santa Clarita.
“We’re devastated by the loss and appalled at the fact that whoever did this was not man enough to stay there and accept responsibility,” said Brian’s father, Harry Westfall of Valencia.
Family and friends of the victims asked the public Monday to help locate the driver of the white Nissan Altima who, witnesses said, caused the fatal collision.
Brian’s mother sagged under the burden of her loss as she gripped a picture of her son before news cameras.
“You read about it … you don’t expect this to happen,” Polly Westfall said. “But life is fragile.”
At 11 p.m., Brian and Lokey crossed through a tunnel where Interstate 405 joins Interstate 5. On the other side, a speeding Altima lost control while changing lanes and slammed into the rear driver’s side of Brian’s car, officials said.
The impact whirled the red sports car across the freeway and crushed it, back-first, into a big-rig truck that was parked on the right shoulder.
The driver of the Altima, described by witnesses as a Hispanic man with a shaved head, stopped momentarily to inspect damage to his own car before he fled the scene with two other Hispanic men, officials said. California Highway Patrol officers recovered pieces of the Altima, which they said has front-end damage, and said the car may have had paper plates.
Lokey told his mother that he recalled waking up and telling Brian that they needed to get out of the car before it caught fire, and that Brian asked what haºppened. Lokey saw his own arm but couldn’t move it — he thought it had been severed — then passed out.
Doctors at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital pronounced Brian dead on arrival. CHP officials said they were not yet sure whether alcohol played a role in the collision. Toxicology reports are typically not available until weeks after an autopsy.
Lokey’s spine had been fractured, along with his arm and several ribs.
