Food and monetary donations are being collected between 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Golden Valley High School to provide for free Thanksgiving dinners for hundreds of Canyon Country families in need.
“About 376 families have signed up to receive a full meal, and our donation signup only reflects 35 turkeys,” said April Rego, director of Project SCV and resource coordinator for Golden Valley High School. “We’re hoping that will change by the end of today.”
The donation drive and “Give a Turkey” event is organized by several community partners (Canyon Church, The Sanctuary Church, Silva Realty, and LoveSCV), all working together with Canyon High and Golden Valley High and Sulphur Springs students and staff to provide Thanksgiving meal kits to 500 families.
“We are working with Real Life, The Sanctuary and LoveSCV to put on the second annual Give a Turkey event, which serves families in need in all schools in Canyon Country,” said Susan Christopher, executive director of LoveSCV.

This is the second year LoveSCV has collaborated with community partners to provide Thanksgiving dinners – each complete with a frozen turkey either canned or boxed sides and desserts –and they are looking to expand.
“Last year it served 230 families, and our goal this year is 500 families,” Christopher said. “The event provides a full Thanksgiving meal for each family.”
Santa Clarita residents interested in contributing to the Give a Turkey event can either donate a frozen turkey, pack a meal or give a monetary donation, according to event organizers.
Food donations are set to be accepted at Golden Valley High School on Nov. 17 between 1 and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Volunteer students directing traffic are expected to be rallying with signs of encouragement for the community, such as “You Matter” and “Canyon Strong = Saugus Strong.”
It should prove to be an encouraging and positive event for the community to rally around, according to Rego.
“We were really debating even doing this in light of what happened,” said Rego, referencing the Saugus High shooting. “But we were getting calls from families asking if they could still get their food, so we decided to go ahead with it.”
Families who have signed up to receive a donation may collect their holiday meals between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 17.
