UPDATE: 5 Freeway Has Re-Opened After Snow, Low Visibility In Grapevine

UPDATE: The 5 Freeway in Castaic reopened Tuesday morning after a night of ice and poor visibility in the Grapevine, with another storm expected later this week.

As of 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, the I-5 Freeway has been reopened in both directions, and California Highway Patrol officials have begun escorts through the Tejon Pass, according to California Department of Transportation, (CALTRANS) officials.

Original story: The Grapevine was first closed around 4:30 a.m. Monday as snow started to fall in the Gorman and Frazier Park areas, causing hazardous driving conditions.

The northbound 5 Freeway is closed at Parker Road, however, motorists wanting to turn around can do so by utilizing the center median gate which is located just north of Lake Hughes Road, according to CALTRANS officials.

With the Grapevine closed, motorists have several alternate routes they can take:

Northbound travelers
Take the northbound US-101 to the eastbound State Route 166, then onto the northbound I-5

Southbound travelers
Take the westbound State Route 166 to the southbound US-101

It is unclear how long the 5 Freeway is expected to be closed, CALTRANS said in a tweet..

A third storm is expected to arrive in the Santa Clarita area by Wednesday, however, snow is not expected to affect the Grapevine, said Ryan Kittell, a spokesperson for the National Weather Service.

  1. Don’t be foolish and put others in danger. If it’s closed take the suggested routes not the old road. All those people who were up there had to be rescued putting others at danger.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
