Expect Lane Closures On The 5 Freeway Near Castaic

If you’re planning to travel along the 5 Freeway north of Castaic this week, you’ll want to give yourself a little extra time, or better yet, consider an alternate route.

Caltrans has announced a series of lane and ramp closures north of Castaic starting Monday, June 2 through Friday, June 6, as crews work to improve the roadway between Lake Hughes Road and two miles north of Templin Highway, near the Whitaker Sand Shed.

What to Expect:

Daily Closures:

  • One lane in each direction will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Overnight Closures:

  • Up to three lanes in each direction will shut down between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Ramp Closures:

  • The southbound Templin Highway off-ramp and the truck brake inspection ramp will also be closed daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and again overnight from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Caltrans assures drivers that no two consecutive ramps will be closed at the same time, and lanes will reopen between closure windows each day.

Still, with major reductions overnight and midday, traffic backups are possible, especially for commuters and truckers heading through the corridor.

Why It’s Happening:

The closures are part of a long-term pavement rehabilitation project that began in April 2022.

The goal? A safer, smoother ride on one of Southern California’s most heavily traveled freeways.

The project includes:

  • Replacing old concrete slabs
  • Upgrading guardrails and drainage systems
  • Stabilizing roadside slopes
  • Rock scaling and geo-grid installation
  • Building retaining walls
