Fallen Tree Blocks Traffic On Magic Mountain Parkway In Valencia

A fallen tree in Valencia came down Thursday morning due to strong Santa Ana wind conditions, blocking lanes of Magic Mountain Parkway, officials said.

UPDATE: The tree has been cleared and all lanes are open, according to City officials.

Around 9:30 a.m., first responders received reports of a downed tree on Magic Mountain Parkway near McBean Parkway in front of the River Oak Shopping Center, said Sean Rios, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“We got reports of a tree down in the street by a passerby,” Rios said.

The tree blocked two westbound lanes on Magic Mountain Parkway before McBean Parkway, according to officials.

Firefighters at the scene requested the City of Santa Clarita to cut up and remove the tree, Rios said.

City crews have been dispatched as of 10 a.m., said Carrie Lujan, a spokesperson for the City of Santa Clarita.

“We try to get there as fast as we can to minimize the impact on traffic and to keep our residents safe,” Lujan said.

Extra crews are available for Thursday and Friday in preparation for more downed trees due to the high winds, Lujan said.

Potential power outages are also expected around Santa Clarita due to the Santa Ana wind event this week, according to Southern California Edison.

City officials are reminding motorists about safety procedures when approaching traffic signals that are experiencing a blackout or have lights flashing:

Traffic Signal Blackout – If all traffic signal lights at an intersection are not working due to an electrical power failure, the intersection must be treated the same way as a four-way stop sign. Drivers must stop at the intersection and then proceed only when it is safe to do so while yielding to bicycles and pedestrians.

Flashing Red Lights – A flashing red traffic signal light means “stop.” After stopping, drivers may proceed when it is safe, observing standard right-of-way rules.

Crews cleared the fallen tree about an hour after it was first reported, according to City officials.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
