65 Additional Santa Clarita Valley Coronavirus Cases Confirmed

65 additional Santa Clarita Valley coronavirus cases have been confirmed Wednesday afternoon, bringing the case total to over 3,700, officials said.

As of Wednesday, a total of 3,723 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Pubic Health. These include:

  • 1,676 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 58 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 1,825 in Castaic*
  • 11 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 87 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 26 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 33 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
  • Two in the unincorporated areas of Sand Canyon

*As of Tuesday, July 14, officials had recorded 1,318 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 493 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

Additionally, 37 cumulative cases have been confirmed in nearby Acton as well as 15 in Agua Dulce.

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department.

As of Wednesday, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 4,482 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 496 have tested positive, and 458 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson.

There are 23 patients in the hospital as of Wednesday, while 140 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to the hospital. This is an increase since the last reported number of inpatients on Wednesday, July 8, when there were 11 patients in the hospital.

Some local patients are tested multiple times, creating a discrepancy in the numbers, according to hospital officials.

An analysis of available data indicates that as of Tuesday, July 14, approximately 49.5 percent of all cumulative cases in and around the Santa Clarita Valley can be attributed to the inmate population at the North County Correctional Facility and the Pitchess Detention Center.

  1. 106 in one day, that’s two to three times greater than our worst days so far. Please people wear masks, social distance and maintain proper hygeine. There are new studies that show that even the worst masks can reduce transmission and lessen cases by tens of thousands. Other studies show that if we could wear masks for anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 week, or 3 weeks to 12 weeks (depending on the study), that this virus could be wiped out within a few months. Please stop looking at this as an I live in America, I can do what I want scenario or a freedom fight. All Americans have the right to health and safety and people who won’t wear masks are taking that right away. Not too mention causing us to reverse our reopening process. It’s the fault of the people that we are closing again, not the governor or mayor or health officials. Focus less on the mask and more on what wearing one means. It means less illness and death, not overwhelming our healthcare system, it means more time to figure out ways to fight the virus, it means working together for the greater good. It is a small sacrifice to wear a mask for 15 minutes. Have you seen the layers of protective gear people who are trying to help us have to wear for 12 hours? It’s selfish, foolish, juvenile and often times deadly for someone if masks are not worn. This virus affects the heart, lungs, brain, kidneys, skin, pancreas. It’s systemic and no joke, and some who survive will never fully recover.

  2. One last thing. Parents, even of young adults, need to take a harder stance on what your children are allowed to do if they are living with you. It’s the 18 to young adult range causing the greatest spikes right now and passing it on to older or more susceptible people. They are going to house parties, even Covid parties, or are gathering in large crowds unmasked. I have two in this age range. They have to work, but we provide masks, sanitizer, lysol wipes, etc and what they do outside of work is run by us. It’s our house and our rules, and that definitely does not allow for parties.

  3. You mean teenagers are not social distancing, practicing hood hygiene, wearing masks at all times?! No. I’m shocked. Can’t control every single person, but keep trying. Good luck ?

  4. Celine, we get teenage rebellion more than your rebellion as an experienced adult.

  5. An experienced adult should have the wisdom to understand that humans are not invincible.

  6. Celine, my kids are in the age range I’m referring to and we’re managing just fine. Our house, our rules! If more people kept track of their teens/young adults who lived with them, we’d have way less cases. We’ve educated our children and they know the risks. It’s not like they’re two with no inderstanding and a three minute attention span. More parents should know where their kids are, educate them, enforce rules, teach them the risks of getting the virus and passing it on and provide them with masks, sanitizer etc. Ann is so right though. With so many adults setting poor examples, who will most kids learn from? Oh them, that’s right. The adults that don’t get it. Another reason we’re all in trouble.
