City Council Meeting Response – Bill Reynolds – July 15, 2020

By: Bill Reynolds – Valencia Resident & Vietnam Veteran

Last night my wife and I dialed into Spectrum’s Channel 20 to watch our City Council’s Public Hearing.  Because of recent “Black Lives Matter” protests we were simply curious if anything related would be discussed.  These days due to Covid-19, public participants must call in to air their issues rather than attend as in days gone by.  After hearing a number of citizens speak on common city issues, I turned to Meg and said, “Things are going really well so far tonight”.  No sooner than I said that, three successive very young women spoke and one after the next they railed on Santa Clarita’s so called rampant racism.  These young females clearly possess trivial life experiences and were obviously in league with their misguided commentary.  Examples expressed related to a Hispanic street vender who had caught grief from a restaurant owner for selling his products adjacent to the owner’s Canyon Country restaurant.  Apparently this street vendor did not possess a city permit.  Their next example related to Councilman Bob Kellar’s statements made ten years ago regarding his strong opposition to illegal immigration.  Several years prior, a young man Kellar had mentored to become a Los Angeles Deputy Sheriff was ambushed and murdered by an illegal alien, hence Kellar’s strong opinion on illegal aliens.  Conversely, these young women actually believe it’s racist to oppose illegal immigration.

Meg and I wondered if our education system is failing to teach American history, particularly regarding the vast numbers of American soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen who have fought, bled and died protecting America’s freedom and America’s sovereignty.  If people are allowed to freely enter our country at will then we have no country.  Freedom is not free…

It should be noted that Bob Kellar has been a Santa Clarita business owner for decades and over the years he has possessed a solid history of employing many people of all faiths and races including Asians, Hispanics and African Americans.  Currently, Kellar’s employment practice holds true.  We applaud Bob Kellar’s lengthy allegiance to Santa Clarita and his extensive commitment to community service.  I consider Bob Kellar a great American!  It’s also noted that last evening a Hispanic restaurant owner in Newhall on Main Street complained of street vendors wreaking havoc with his business.  He asked City Council to put a stop to it.

A very high level of frustration exists across Santa Clarita and throughout California regarding Governor’s Newsome’s renewed closure of businesses and Churches along with the very strong possibility of our children being blocked from attending school this fall.  In light of all that, it’s absolutely perplexing that certain people are still wrongly bemoaning our City Council and the non existence “systemic racism” here in Santa Clarita.  It’s preposterous.

  1. Thank you. I agree with most everything you have said. I happen to think that this whole racism issue is the biggest play of a race card since OJ SIMPSON And this play has fooled millions. And being that the BLM is funded and run by the Democrats that this is all political. We have had a black man hold the highest office in the land which means that the majority of the people didn’t have issue with race. Obama had eight years to repair our country’s systemic racism. Now that the white male voters have Trump we all of the sudden are a racist country again. Racism will always be here but to say we have a racist society is all politics.
