The shelter, located at 23031 Drayton Street, is set to open on Nov. 23, 2015, though may open sooner on Nov. 16, said Tim Davis, executive director of Bridge To Home.
“Every year it’s a mad dash,” Tammy McGivern, public relations director for Bridge To Home. said. “We didn’t get the contract until last week so we couldn’t open Nov. 2, which is when we originally wanted to open.”
The opening date could move up pending a meeting between Davis, and the L.A. Homeless Services Authority, or LAHSA, this coming Monday, Nov. 2.
The Emergency Winter Shelter runs throughout winter into mid-March and is open every day from 6 p.m. – 8 a.m., McGivern said.
Bridge To Home may have to extend the shelter an extra 30 days this season if L.A. County issues a weather emergency, due to the potentially bad weather that may come from El Nino, Davis said.
A Go Fund Me account was set up by Bridge To Home to bring in donations if the shelter needs to stay open for an extra 30 days for those who wish to donate.
The shelter provides a bed, a hot shower and basic facilities for those in need during the colder months. It also supplies three meals a day, a hot dinner, a breakfast and a sack lunch for when they leave the shelter for the day, McGivern said.
People who go to the shelter can also receive case management, health services and referrals for additional services, according to the website.
The shelter will also show movies in the evening for people who use the shelter, said McGivern.
The future plan for the shelter is to have a permanent, year-long shelter that can provide the same services everyday, McGivern said.
“Currently, we’re looking at properties, site surveying,” McGivern said. “There is a lot of background work, about a year of work on just this.”
Bridge To Home also been providing free meals out of the shelter every Tuesday through Friday since June and Mondays at Real Life Church’s Savia, which provides meals for about 40 – 60 people, McGivern said.
