Canyon Country Park Set to Receive An Inclusive Play Area, Accessible For Wheelchairs

Canyon Country Park is set to receive an inclusive play area by the end of the year designed to be used by all children, including those with wheelchairs, officials said.

The project is set to break ground at the park on Soledad Canyon Road in July following the Santa Clarita City Council’s approval of a contract during their Feb. 12 meeting.

The play area, which is set to include elements that welcome those of all abilities and ages, is planned to open in late 2019 as the city’s first inclusive play area, according to officials.

“Typically an inclusive play area allows all people to play on the same equipment,” said Jeff Morrison, project development manager for the City of Santa Clarita. “For instance, a person in a wheelchair can go on ramps on the equipment.”

The play areas are created to make the experience available for everyone, Morrison said.

“Playgrounds can offer many opportunities to further develop physical, cognitive, sensory and social skills,” said officials in a statement. “An inclusive design includes a balance of play experiences to build these skills.”

The play area is set to include a shaded structure and is expected to measure approximately 8,500 square feet upon completion, according to officials.

“Play is the universal language of children,” said Mayor Marsha McLean. “All children regardless of ability should be able to enjoy the playgrounds in our parks, and this new inclusive playground in Canyon Country Park will make that possible. Inclusive playgrounds mean that all children will be able to enjoy mingling and friend-making, and we are proud to provide this opportunity.”

New seating areas for children and adults will also be added to the landscaping surrounding the play area.

Accessible connections to existing facilities, including the preschool building, restrooms, picnic shelter, walkways, trails and parking are also set to be added to Canyon Country Park.

The City of Santa Clarita is planning to hold two public outreach meetings to obtain community input and feedback about the project.

Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2019, with project completion anticipated for the end of the year, according to officials.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
