Karen Gagnon and Christine Racina, teachers from the middle school, and students started an after-school club last year called KLAWS (Kids Loving Animals within Shelters).

“They just have a heart for this community project by supporting the animal shelter in Castaic,” said Charmin Ortega, executive assistant to the superintendent.

The club adopted the Castaic Animal Shelter as its primary mission, and have been working closely with the shelter, supporting any needs it may have, according to a news release from the school’s district.

“It’s nice to teach the kids giving back and it teaches them how to be kind, how to give back their own time and how important volunteering is,” said Ortega.

KLAWS is also planning to to plant a small garden at the shelter in October called “Plants for Paws.”

  1. What an amazing experience for the kids. My daughter Jenna, was so excited and happy to be a part of this. We go to the shelter often since being a part of the KLAWS program to visit the dogs. Thank you to CMS & KLAWS for giving this chance to the kids to do something giving of their time and hearts!
