College Of The Canyons To Host Sexual Harassment Seminar

College of the Canyons is scheduled to host a free event focused on sexual harassment and assault prevention this month.

COC officials are set to host “Wake Up, Stand Up,” a sexual harassment and assault prevention seminar for students, created and run by students from all over Santa Clarita, according to event organizers.

“At the event, there will be a professional panel, in-depth workshops, diverse workshops, and a community art gallery in order to create the most universal representation of education and advocacy,” said Joelle Min, Academy of The Canyons student and founder of the seminar.

The mission of the seminar is to change the flawed mutual respect made by sexual harassment, according to Min.

Before high school and college students graduate and find their paths in life, Wake Up, Stand Up aims to educate on sexual harassment through mental health and communal respect, among other things.

The free event is also set to host Assemblywoman Christy Smith who is expected to be in attendance along with panelists Shana Williams (COC), Alexis Claiborn (ASU Graduate), Leah Parker (Child & Family Center), Alejandra Sandoval (Peace over Violence), and Caryn Sanders (Lawyer).

In addition to the main panel, various workshops and booths are expected to be offered. Workshops available at the event are Tools You Can Use, Sexism in Media, Male POV, Consent, Healthy Relationships & Red Flags, and Victim Blaming, according to officials.

Booths representing COC Health Center, Child & Family Center, UCLA Rape Center, Peace Over Violence, Strength United, PFLAG, Zonta, Damsel in Defense, and Peace and Happy are also set to be present, according to an official Wake Up, Stand Up statement.

The free event is scheduled to be held at the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center at College of the Canyons located at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Rd. on April 20. Participants are invited from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Free parking, admission, and brunch is set to be available for all attendees.
