Two Weeks In And Cody Bellinger And The Dodgers Are Mauling People

The Los Angeles Dodgers are 8-2 after completing a weekend sweep of the Rockies in Colorado, and lead the National League in every meaningful offensive statistical category after the first two weeks of the season–thanks in large part to NL Player of the Week Cody Bellinger.

L.A. outscored the Rockies 29-14 in a three game sweep at Coors Field last weekend. They lead the National League in runs scored, home runs, hits and batting average. Six Dodgers players have already hit more than two home runs through the first ten games.

Cody Bellinger has hit more home runs than five Major League Baseball teams by himself. The Dodgers as a whole couldn’t have started the season much better.

With the Kings finishing last in the National Hockey League Pacific Division and the Lakers missing the playoffs for the sixth straight season, the Dodgers are the talk of spring sports in Los Angeles.

And at the 1/16th mark of the season, Cody Bellinger is the National League MVP. Bellinger leads the league in hitting, home runs and RBIs. Five regular players on the roster are hitting .300 or above.

While much of the more heralded pitchers such as Walker Buehler (who will need to time to round into form), Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill continue to make their way back to the mound, two guys that have been anchoring the pitching staff in the early going are getting an opportunity to show just how valuable they still are to the team.

Hyun-Jin Ryu and Kenta Maeda are off to 2-0 starts and are 1 and 2 in innings pitched for the club. In Ryu’s case, battling back from an injury-plagued 2018 has him fresh and pitching his best. Maeda on the other hand has had to work through juggling different roles (moving to the bullpen during the postseason) at different points throughout the past couple seasons. They’re getting the job done and hopefully continue to deliver in 2019.

Monday, the Dodgers open a four game series in St. Louis against the Cardinals. Hyun-Jin Ryu goes for his league leading third win of the season at 4:45, and be sure to catch every inning of Dodgers baseball live on your hometown station KHTS FM 98.1.
