The incident was the deadliest incident for police since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, according to CNN.

“At 6’5”, he was a gentle giant, he was friendly and helpful,” said Fred Arnold, owner of American Family Funding and Santa Clarita resident who attended High School with Aherns. “He was always willing to help others.”

Ahrens’ class reunion at Alemany High School was last weekend, two days after his death.

“Lorne Ahrens, Alemany Class of ’86, passed away in Dallas yesterday, a victim of the violence that took his life and the life of four other Dallas police officers,” said Alemany officials. “The Bishop Alemany High School community unites in prayer for the family of Lorne Ahrens ’86, who lost his life protecting the people of Dallas.”

Ahrens’ served the LASD and the residents of the Los Angeles County for more than 10 years from 1991 to 2002. He left the Department as a Law Enforcement Technician on January 23, 2002, and officially began his service with the Dallas Police Department just two days later, according to CNN.

Dallas Officer Lorne Ahrens, 48, was a great co-worker, said Sgt. Anthony Gunn of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“I had the honor of working with Lorne at LASD’s Lennox Station in the early 1990s and at Lancaster Station in the late 1990’s,” Gunn told CNN. “I was a young deputy and he was a law enforcement technician, assigned to input and dispatch calls for service at both stations.”

Ahrens’ was remembered kindly by his co-workers.

“He was the kind of guy that it made you happy when you got to work and saw he would be working the shift with you,” Gunn said. “You could count on him to do the right thing, the right way. He was a dedicated professional. He was well-grounded, seeing the world the way it really, is but not letting the evil in the world discourage him from doing good.”
