A tow truck driver was killed Friday in a hit-and-run crash after he was reportedly loading a vehicle on to his truck, according to officials.
UPDATE: 6/2/19 11:30 a.m. — The incident has been identified as a hit-and-run, as the big rig that truck the tow truck operator did not stop, officials said.
Around 8:15 p.m. Friday, officials received reports of a traffic collision on the southbound 5-freeway north of Templin Highway, according to Mike Pittman, dispatch supervisor for the Los Angeles County Fire Dept.
“By the time responders were on scene, it was apparent the victim had not survived their injuries,” said Pittman.
California Highway Patrol officials reported a big rig struck the tow-truck driver.
“It looks like there was a disabled vehicle that called for a tow truck, and (the operator) was assisting the disabled vehicle when just a few moments later a big-rig veered to the right and collided with the operator, who was outside of his vehicle, said Officer Josh Greenguard with the California Highway Patrol. “The big rig kept driving so at this point it’s a felony hit and run.”
As of Sunday, the suspect vehicle has not been found.
Initial reports were that the tow truck driver was possibly loading a vehicle onto the truck when he was struck, according to CHP officials.
