First Responders Rescue Driver From Vehicle After Plunging 100 Feet Off Sand Canyon

First responders performed a rope rescue early Wednesday morning after a vehicle plunged 100 feet over the side of Sand Canyon Road, leaving the driver stranded and attempting to seek help for six hours, officials said.

Just after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, dispatchers received a report of a vehicle over the side near Sand Canyon Road and Little Tujunga Road east of Santa Clarita, according to Chris Thomas, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“It came out as a vehicle over the side below Bear Divide,” Thomas said.

Units from the SCV and Montrose Search and Rescue Teams, California Highway Patrol and Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were called to assist in the rescue.

The driver was down there for six hours before getting the attention of a passerby, according to the Santa Clarita Valley Search and Rescue.

Upon arrival, firefighters found one person outside the vehicle, not able to traverse the steep embankment back to the road.

A helicopter from L.A. County Fire was dispatched to the scene but was unable to perform a hoist due to the terrain, according to Thomas.

A firefighter put on equipment and repelled down the side of the road to perform the rope rescue.

After making contact with the victim, the firefighter pulled them 100 feet back onto the road, with the assistance of numerous other first responders pulling the rope tethered to Engine 123.

Once evaluated by medical professionals, it was determined the victim was uninjured, according to Thomas.
