The family of Roberta Veloz, previous SCV Woman of the Year winner and community philanthropist, shared news of her death with the community Sunday afternoon.
Roberta Veloz, a Valencia resident and previous SCV Woman of the Year, was shared to have passed away Sunday. She is remembered for her activism in the community.
“Roberta was an amazing woman who was instrumental in my growth as a leader,” said Dr. Dianne Van Hook, Chancellor of College of the Canyons. “When I first came to the Santa Clarita Valley, she was one of the few female CEOs in the community. She was an incredible role model and mentor, and I learned from her example while working with her on many initiatives, including the executive committee for the United Way.”
Roberta Veloz was born in Missouri, and after several moves through her lifetime, she moved to Valencia after she and her husband bought the Aquafine Corporation in 1980, according to the SCV Man and Woman of the Year (SCVMW) site.
“Roberta became not only a corporate executive, but plunged into local volunteer work in the Santa Clarita Valley,” reads the SCVMW site. “She joined the board of the Samuel Dixon Family Health Center, then became a member of the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation board and the Child & Family Center board.”
Veloz also worked on various College of the Canyons capital campaigns.
“She played a particularly pivotal role in the success of our University Center Capital Campaign through her generosity and ability to help others see the vision of what it would mean for local residents to have access to advanced degrees,” Dr. Van Hook added. “She is someone whose courage, strength and philanthropy shaped our community, and she will be greatly missed. I consider myself blessed to have counted her as a friend.”
In 1998, Roberta was named the Santa Clarita Valley Woman of the Year. Since receiving that award, she continued her involvement with the Child & Family Center, the Samuel Dixon Family Health Center, and the COC Foundation. She also joined the governing board of Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, according to SCVMW.

The Veloz family have been so generous to our community. Another great activist gone. Thank you for inspiring and touching so many lives to continue where you left off. Rest in peace.
Roberta will be remembered for a long time. She was a remarkable woman and I admired her for all she did in this community. God bless you.
Roberta was an inspirational community leader and she will be deeply missed. RIP, Roberta.
Roberta was one terrific lady and I was delighted when she became president of the Board of Directors of SDFHC while I was the executive director at that time. She was inspiring, energetic, did not understand the meaning of the word “no,” and of course always interesting and with no shortage of opinions. I am glad to have had the opportunity to have known her. She leaves one heck of a big legacy in Santa Clarita.
