Single-use plastics are getting tossed in unincorporated L.A. County, as a new county ordinance is banning their use in restaurants and take-out services.
Restaurants inside the limits of the City of Santa Clarita will not be affected by the change to single-use plastics, which went into effect Monday.
LA County is putting a fork into plastic pollution. As of 5/1/23, restaurants in unincorporated areas can not distribute single-use serviceware that is not compostable/recyclable. This helps save dwindling landfill space & taxpayer dollars. Learn more: https://t.co/i9J4blVHwh pic.twitter.com/aWTUNlG1ZN

Notably, restaurants in unincorporated L.A. County, including Castaic, Stevenson Ranch, and parts of Canyon Country, will be allowed to offer disposable food containers, cups, dishes and utensils, however, they must be compostable or recyclable.
This is similar to current guidelines requiring that plastic single-use straws be only available upon customer request.
In addition, the ban prohibits the sale of Styrofoam products (expanded polystyrene) including coolers and packaging materials like takeout containers unless they are encased in a durable material that makes them multi-use.
According to the County Ordinance summary, enforcement will “prioritize education and working with businesses to bring them into compliance initially rather than using a punitive approach,” after which violations may be subject to fines of up to $100 per day per violation, up to a maximum of $1000 per year.

Is the County of Los Angeles going to reimburse those restaurants for the extra costs for the so called recyclable bowls, forks and spoons? Companies are having enough of a hardship.
What a bunch of crap, this is what they are worried about ?
I guess they want the transients they live to eat with their dirty hands.
Obviously you’ve never been to a beach clean-up if you think we don’t need to change this.
More insane, hysterical, overreacting by the controlling burnt out hippie Liberals!! Just like banning the Thin plastic bags to much thicker plastic bags we now pay for! Wonder if the plastic bag companies donated to the hysterical Liberal bill maker!?!?
BBill you probably don’t think pollution is a problem, but it is. You probably don’t think humans have an effect on global warming, but we do. Instead of calling everyone names, spend some time learning.
