Grants Offered To Horse Owners Affected By Sand Fire

Thousands of residents were displaced by the Sand Fire last month, along with thousands of animals, including horses — many of which are unable to return to the barn or stable they called home due to damage by the fire.

A national company is offering grant money to these horses and their owners to help cover the cost of repairs and rebuilding after the fire.

“Anything to do with animals,” said Tita Brown, owner of TB Transportation, which specializes in equine transportation. “If they have to replace their hay, replace their feed, while they rebuild their properties — anything.”

She emphasized the importance of the grant for any horses needing to be boarded while their shelter is being reconstructed, saying that it could provide temporary shelter for the animals

Hundreds of animals were taken in by L.A. County Department of Animal Care and Control staff, volunteers and mutual aid partners during the fire.

At least  345 horses, 165 goats, 111 chickens, 33 pigs and many others, including llamas, mules, sheep, rabbits, ducks, turkeys, donkeys and even a Brahma bull were reported at several of the evacuation sites for large animals.

Several of the sites had to shut down over the course of the fire and direct resident seeking to board their animals to the next site, as they were reaching capacity too quickly to keep up with the amount of people and animals that were displaced.

Anybody seeking to apply for a grant should contact Brown by email or through the TB Transportation website.
