Pardeep Kumar, 47, of Newhall, was arrested Tuesday on mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon, involuntary servitude and human trafficking charges.

“The case was reviewed for filing consideration but it was declined due to a lack of sufficient evidence,” said Ricardo Santiago, spokesman for the District Attorney’s Office.

“The actual charge evaluation worksheet is not available, yet,” he said, adding that would explain the reason behind why the case was declined.

Kumar was released from custody Thursday.

Sheriff’s Department officials announced the charges at a news conference Wednesday, featuring the alleged victim’s brother, who reported the allegations to Sheriff’s Department officials.

Kumar was arrested at the restaurant Tuesday.

  1. Is the guy back working in the kitchen yet?

  2. Safe to assume the victim declined to press? That’s the only way I can see charges being dropped…

  3. After he does the shopping…

  4. Although the owner was released; is their still going to be further investigation? Seems as if this case has been taken too lightly considering how prevalent the reality of human trafficking is in our day. I’m sure their are more cob webs this owner harbors!! I think be needs to be investigated further.

  5. I have an Indian friend & She says that there are million cases like this, since the people are used as slaves & not paid plus are not allowed to have contact with outside world, they usually don’t speak English & are promised salary , but once they are in this country they are treated like slaves with no pay & are abused verbally & physically!! What a shame that DA DROPPED THE CASE. The owner of Tandoori Grill shoul be prosecuted,. There was a case in New Jersey where an Indian Doctor couple was using an Indian person from India as a slave!!

  6. If a crime was committed there is no need for anyone to press charges. It is a violation of law which must be prosecuted.

Without physical evidence, based only on hearsay, these cases are very difficult to prove and D.A.s only move forward if they believe there is a very good chance for a conviction. Otherwise there is a blemish on their record limiting their ability to get a promotion or raise.

Justice is sometimes the goal in the court system, but more often than not it is simply two lawyers fighting it out to see who wins. The client is merely a pawn. A tragic reality.
