Villanueva increased his lead over McDonnell to over 120,000 votes Monday, as Los Angeles County completes the count of provisional and vote-by-mail ballots.

“Today, I contacted Alex Villanueva to offer my best wishes for his administration as the 33rd elected Sheriff of Los Angeles County,” McDonnell said. “We are in the process of arranging an orderly transition and a series of briefings to assist the new administration and it is my hope that the Sheriff-elect will come to his new position with an open-mind.”

McDonnell thanked the nearly 1.2 million people who voted for him and reminded voters that the sworn and civilian personnel of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are doing a great job under difficult circumstances.

“The honor of serving as the LA County Sheriff is one like no other in law enforcement,” added McDonnell.

The Sheriff was defeated among controversy in the department involving alleged racial profiling and deputy cliques.

“As the elected leader of the nation’s largest Sheriff’s Department, and the second largest law enforcement agency in the nation, the Sheriff will be immediately faced with a range of very complex issues that go to the heart of maintaining public safety and public trust,” said McDonnell.

Villanueva, a retired Sheriff’s Lieutenant, is set to be sworn in on Dec. 3.

  1. With the abrupt change and loss in the re-election of Sheriff Jim McDonnell – and considering the current Sheriff did win the Santa Clarita Valley, city leaders, city council and the city manager must re-examine the contractual relationship between the City of Santa Clarita and the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department.

Now is the time to begin the process of establishing a city-run and city managed City of Santa Clarita Police Department.
