Six Flags Magic Mountain officials expect construction on Twisted Colossus to finish soon, they said Friday, during a walking tour of the park.

Twisted Colossus is a revamp of the “iconic woodie” — construction crews are putting a steel track on the already existing wooden Colossus structure, according to Magic Mountain spokeswoman Sue Carpenter.

Constructing a roller coaster from some parts of an already existing roller coaster presents unique challenges because it takes a lot of adapting, said Bruce Thompson, construction manager.

More than half the wood from the original Colossus is being used in Twisted Colossus, Carpenter said.

There are about 50 construction employees working on the coaster on any given day, Thompson said. 

Magic Mountain officials will be releasing when the ride will open in the next few weeks, Carpenter said.

The coaster will have four trains, each with six cars, Carpenter said. A total of 24 people can ride in each train and three trains can be running at once. Each train will be a different color — orange, purple, blue and green.

The original Colossus wooden coaster opened June 29, 1978, and was closed Aug. 17 of last year.
