New Canyon Country Community Center Opens To The Public

A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday marked the grand opening of the new Canyon Country Community Center, with a day of activities and fun for the public.

Located at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road, the center is a recreational and cultural spot for residents to gather and take part in a number of activities. The 9-acre site features a 25,000 square foot building and outdoor space with a playground, basketball court and fields.

On Saturday, residents along with local representatives held a ceremony to officially announce the opening of the center. In attendance was Mayor Bill Miranda, Congressman Mike Garcia, Senator Scott Wilk and Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares.

“Two and a half years ago, this site housed a smattering of buildings, a vacant lot full of brush and debri and a large billboard,” said Miranda at the ceremony. “Now this site is home to a hub for recreation, enrichment and activity.”

“What’s most exciting about this building is that it’s coming at a time when the community needs it. This pandemic has been very isolating for a lot of people and this is going to open doors so we can engage with our neighbors,” said Valladares.

Following the ribbon-cutting, the public was able to walk through the center for the first time and view the large complex that features rooms and a gym for social and physical activities such as cooking demonstrations, dance classes and parkour. Locally done art pieces adorned the main hallway inside.

“When you look at the architecture and the design it’s something that enhances the community,” said Garcia. “Community centers like this keep our kids off the streets, doing meaningful things and allow our seniors to enjoy their retirement.”

The outdoor space of the center bustled with activity as people participated in different field sports on the center’s two large fields, the basketball court and the playground. Food trucks were stationed in the parking lot for residents to enjoy as well.

The Canyon Country Community Center is open to the public and located at 18410 Sierra Highway, Canyon Country.
