Monolito Guerra, the man accused of shooting Sheriff’s Deputy Albert White last year, is set to return to court next month for a continuation of his preliminary hearing setting after the decision was pushed off Tuesday, according to officials.

His next preliminary hearing setting date is scheduled for Aug. 27.
Guerra, 29, of Newhall, allegedly shot and wounded a deputy on Nov. 28, 2017 at an apartment complex in the 21300 block of Bottletree Lane.
A woman had called authorities that night to report that someone pointed a gun at her as she was getting out of her vehicle, the sheriff’s department reported.
The assailant fled near the pool area of the apartment complex, and deputies also learned that there was a possible second person involved.
“When deputies arrived on scene, they contacted the victim and began a search for the suspects,” according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials.

The suspect was located in the parking area near the pool, when he allegedly fired his gun towards deputies.
A deputy-involved shootout occurred with four deputies. White was shot in the neck during the shootout.
The 29-year-old deputy suffered a “through-and-through” wound to his neck. The four-year veteran of the department was rushed to a hospital by fellow deputies and was released the next day.
“A quarter of an inch either way, it would have taken out his carotid (artery) or his spine,” said Sheriff Jim McDonnell. “We’re just very thankful that the results were what they were.”
The gunman was wounded at least once in the upper body, the sheriff’s department reported.
He was transferred to a medical jail ward and booked on suspicion of parole violation. At the time of the arrest, McDonnell said the suspect was a parolee who had been released from prison in October.

Through their investigation, homicide detectives learned that Guerra was initially arrested on Oct. 15, 2014. He was sentenced to state prison on Feb. 2, 2016, according to authorities.
Guerra was serving a five-year prison term for evading arrest, a four-year prison term for a secondary charge of evading arrest, and an eight-month prison term for assault with a deadly weapon, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez.
Guerra was later paroled to Santa Clarita on Oct. 19. The deputy-involved shooting occurred less than six weeks later, authorities said.
Guerra is currently being held in lieu of more than $5.7 million bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
A preliminary hearing setting is one of the first steps in the courtroom process, after a defendant pleads not guilty. At this stage in the process, a judge decides when a preliminary hearing will be held.
A preliminary hearing is when lawyers for the prosecution and the defense present their evidence to the judge, who then decides if there is probable cause to believe the crime was committed by the defendant.
After that, a trial will be scheduled, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
