Hill hosted the town hall at Machinist Hall in Palmdale after officially being sworn into office only three days prior.

“I’ve been part of this community my entire life, and this is why I felt like it was so important to come back home and talk to you about what is happening,” Hill said at the town hall. “The reality is, I entered this job in the midst of turmoil where we have a government that is not functioning, and that’s a huge part of why this new Congress was elected; to try and bring some sort of normalcy back to government.”

The partial government shutdown currently affects more than 800,000 federal workers and contractors, including TSA agents, first responders and border patrol workers, according to officials.

The main issue of contention between Democratic lawmakers in Congress and President Donald Trump has been funding for a wall along the US-Mexico border, with Trump asking for $5 billion and newly-elected Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi refusing to fund the wall.

“When I was sworn in on Thursday, we immediately voted on a bipartisan package that would provide critical funding for border security, and also reopen the government,” Hill said. “As of Friday, the president showed that he is still unwilling to prioritize the hardworking people of this country.”

Trump sent out a tweet Monday stating that he plans to address the nation from the Oval Office Tuesday evening to discuss what he called “the crisis at the southern border.”

The partial shutdown has become the third longest government shutdown in history as of Monday.

If the shutdown reaches Jan. 18, it will become the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, beating out the 1995-96 shutdown that occurred as the result of conflict between President Bill Clinton and Republican lawmakers over Medicare, according to officials.

“Real people are suffering,” Hill said. “People aren’t getting their paychecks, people aren’t able to access services, and it’s only going to get worse unless we finally put a stop to the madness.”

  1. Thank god for Trump, Democrats need to learn to WORK FOR AMERICA AND FOR AMERICANS.
This constant fight they have about letting ILLEGALS in with no consequence is a joke. We in America are tired for paying for other people’s kids and we’ve had enough.
We should be allowed to say who can and who CANT and enough our ALREADY EXISTING immigration laws.

Thank you Trump for standing up for Americans!
    Fuck Katie Hill

    • Bender; I agree with you except for your use of expletives!!! By using that kind of language you only fuel the fire of hate ! We as conservatives don’t want to lower ourselves to this kind of thing! We need to be strong, NOT vulgar,

  2. We always want both sides to come together and be flexible and negotiate. The total cost of the wall is estimated to be about $25 billion and Trump and the republicans are only asking for a fraction of that, $5 billion. I think $5 billion is fair for both sides.
Will Mexico pay for it? Does it really matter when we need this wall for the safety of our American citizens. Will it stop the problem 100%? No. But of the 51,856 individuals and 25,172 family units (NPR 1/6/18) that were arrested in November without the wall, ask yourself how many of those would scale and get past a 30 foot (3 story high wall) smart wall with monitoring electronics. Not many at all. Hopefully Katie Hill sees this but I fear she’s just a Pelosi puppet.

    • Wayne; I am in total agreement with you, and I think we need to add two other factors-
      1. 5 billion is just a fraction of what it is costing us annually without the wall!,
      2. How much is an American life worth, and how many have already been lost because of ILLEGAL aliens!!?? I wonder how Katie would feel if one of them was her family member!!

    • Fund the wall Katie Hill, do what we need and want
