Scott Ervin and Todd Wilson from the Speakeasy Bakery in Santa Clarita hosted a baking class for KHTS staff members Tuesday to teach the art of bread making, and to discuss how they aim to feed the hungry.

Ervin and Wilson have baked separately as a hobby, but within the last few years have teamed up to create the Speakeasy Bakery, a bakery without an actual building — or any staff.
“The Speakeasy Bakery is more of an attitude than a physical place,” writes the pair on their Facebook page. “It’s where, somehow, you find yourself slicing into a loaf of bread that, quite frankly, you can’t get in the SCV. Not right now anyway. Not yet.”
The Speakeasy Bakery has been a part of a handful of local events that raised money for different non-profits, and they are in the beginning stages of creating their own called FeedSCV.
The idea began when Ervin created a Facebook group where he would announce when he was making bread and people would comment to pick it up from him. He enjoyed making it, and people enjoyed eating it.
People found the Speakeasy Bakery’s Facebook group when it stemmed from the EatSCV, and Santa Clarita Foodies Facebook pages, which Ervin and Wilson are also a part of.
The name Speakeasy Bakery was chosen when Ervin would have to meet people at the curb in front of his house to give out the bread because of his barking dogs.
Eventually, making enough loaves of bread for those who wanted it became unrealistic, and residents encouraged Ervin to teach people how to make bread.
“Since ancient times, bread has been the cornerstone of the world’s nutrition,” said Ervin.
Ervin and Wilson teach classes to residents who are interested in learning how to make artisan bread. Join the Speakeasy Bakery’s Facebook page to learn more details.
“We have two priorities, one is educating others on how to make high quality, delicious bread,” said Ervin. “The second is working for charity in order to keep people fed and nourished.”
