A Santa Clarita bank robber who’s now stolen from five Santa Clarita banks likely ditched his PT Cruiser, detectives said Thursday.

The “PT Cruiser Bandit,” a nickname given locally, was prompted by several reports due to the presence of the uniquely shaped small family car at several robberies.

But detectives indicated Thursday it’s likely no longer his means of transport based on recent evidence and the numerous reports listing the car. Witness reports from Monday’s incident mentioned a white Acura SUV, although witnesses were not able to provide detectives with a license plate or additional details.

Detectives suspect the white male in his 50-60s also has pretty good idea of what he’s doing. The suspect hasn’t revealed much in the way of evidence left behind at the scene, said Detective Berry of the Sheriff’s Department’s Major Crimes Bureau, who’s been tracking the man for months.

Below is a map of his five Santa Clarita bank robberies.

“It’s the same MO as before, he passed them a note that demands money and then he left the bank,” Berry said, describing how the robbery this week mirrored several other bank robberies in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

In fact, during the past five Santa Clarita bank robberies, the customers have been unaware of the robbery taking place, according to witnesses contacted by KHTS News.

A multitude of factors — the timing of the bank robberies to coincide with traffic slowing the “cavalry’s response,” the lack of a trail, the “clean getaways” — all point to the work of a seasoned professional, Berry said.

But thus far, an identity for the suspect has eluded the department’s experienced investigators, as well as those in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, and FBI agents who have joined in the multi-jurisdictional efforts.

Detectives have shared his picture in the hopes of getting one of the lucky breaks that, so far, have all gone to the criminal suspect. A proactive teller might be the best hope detectives have of stopping the suspect before he’s able to get to his pre-planned exit route.

“He’s an older guy, he knows what he’s doing and he’s left behind very little evidence,” Berry said, “making it very difficult.”

One law enforcement officer speculated to KHTS News recently it seemed like the suspect was being so brazen it almost appeared he wants to be caught, but the detectives seeking out the suspect didn’t appear as convinced.

“I don’t know about that,” he said in response to the speculation, however, he also added, “the more robberies that you do, the greater the chances that you get caught.”

  1. Ok, so from ALL the bank photos of this guy, the banks still don’t recognize him when he walks in? I realize that he is wearing a hat and sunglasses but c’mon, he wears basically the same type of clothing every time, he’s caucasian and in his 60s. I think that if I worked in a bank, I would be quite vigilant about every caucasian male, in their 60’s, wearing a cap and sunglasses, who walks into the bank with their freakin’ sunglasses ON! Does he have a gun? Just a note? Oh please.. don’t tell me there’s no weapon and he simply takes the money and saunters out of the bank…! I think the banks should have a note on the entrance:
“Due to the multiple bank robberies SCV has been experiencing, all patrons must remove sunglasses and hats entering the bank. Failure to do so will result in no service”. There. My two cents worth.

  2. Me too! Excellent idea!

  3. @catbee in Albuquerque, New Mexico this is the law. All hats and sunglasses come off before you walk in the door and there is a guard at the door who makes you do it if you forget. Been there.

  4. Im glad he got away. Not to many people have ball’s. No one know what a person is going through so at least give this bandit some balls prop. Plus the banks are bonded and no one was hurt. As for investigators seeking him out must of not been trying to hard. The only break they got is by a snitch who always does it for money. Another way to rob. Don’t get me wrong in what I’m saying that’s just how I felt. Go seasoned bank robber. To bad some one told on you. I wish you i knew a bank robber. At least he is safe and can’t rob again.
