During a recent appearance on KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita plastic surgeon Dr. Justin B. Heller answered a somewhat common question from 21-year-old Tina of Saugus about breast augmentation.

Tina says, “I’m 21 years old, in great shape, but my breasts are small — they’re an ‘A’ cup. What’s involved with increasing my bust, and more importantly, what’s a good size?”
Heller first advised possibly waiting about a year for a breast augmentation due to Tina’s young age, and also pointed out one limitation her age brings to the procedure.

“At 21, you can’t actually go with a silicone implant — you can only use a saline implant,” Heller said. “That’s probably the first consideration, is whether or not you want saline versus silicone in terms of the look, the feel. There’s pros and cons of each.”
Next, Heller addressed what he called the most important point to take away from Tina’s question: what’s a good size?
“There is a right size for every person,” he explained. “When you’re looking at somebody, you want to look at their overall body shape, and there’s beautiful body shapes, but they come in different sizes, different forms, different heights.”
For example, a larger breast size will usually “match” a taller woman with wider hips and shoulders. However, a shorter, more petite woman will likely “match” a smaller breast size.
Choosing a size also depends on the overall look the patient would like to achieve, which Heller noted is usually more natural for mothers and more pronounced for younger women.
“It’s really based on what you desire in terms of an ultimate result,” he said. “The most common size I usually go around is a ‘C’ cup, maybe a small ‘D’ in somebody in (Tina’s) age range. But the actual size of the implant and how we do it will vary depending on what we’re trying to achieve.”
