‘Pink Moon’ To Illuminate Easter Sunday

Santa Clarita is expected to experience the rise of a full” pink moon” this weekend, illuminating Easter Sunday.

The pink moon – named after “herb moss pink,” the earliest widespread blooming flowers during spring – should light up by 3 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, but is not expected to be visible until after sunset at 7:30 p.m.

“The next full moon will be on Saturday afternoon, April 16, 2022, appearing opposite the Sun in Earth-based longitude at 2:55 p.m. EDT,” read a statement from NASA. “This will be on Sunday morning from the India Standard Time Zone eastward across the rest of Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Ocean to the International Date Line.”

The Moon should appear full with pink undertones for about three days from early Friday morning through early Monday morning, making Easter weekend a full moon weekend, according to NASA officials.

The pink moon is not considered a supermoon that happens when the moon is full and has its orbit closest to earth, but is still expected to appear slightly larger and more vivid.

For the best views, NASA suggests finding an open area at the time of moonrise, when the moon emerges above the horizon when it is expected to look the best and brightest on Saturday.

This weekend’s moon is also considered the Paschal full moon for the Christian ecclesiastical calendar, or the moon cycle that determines when Easter is scheduled to fall each year.
