“Personally, I know now that I can get married and my cousin, who used to live in Texas, can get married,” said 18-year-old Andrew Taban, member of the Santa Clarita Unity Coalition. “The Supreme Court finally expanded human rights across our country.”
The United States is the 21st country to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide, including territories, according to a CNN report. Married same-sex couples will now enjoy the same legal rights and benefits as married heterosexual couples nationwide and will be recognized on official documents such as birth and death certificates.
The Santa Clarita Decision Day Rally, held Friday, “was a love rally where people got together to socialize and celebrate,” Taban said. The event was put on by the Santa Clarita Unity Coalition and PFLAG SCV.
The Santa Clarita Unity Coalition is “striving to build a community in which each person respects the rights of others to be proud of who and what they are and to live with peace and dignity,” according to their Facebook page.
PFLAG SCV is “a loving community of compassionate and welcoming individuals providing you a safe place where parents, families, allies and the LGBTQ community can comfortably converse and listen,” according to their Facebook page. PFLAG SCV meets every fourth Wednesday at 7 p.m. at 24901 Orchard Village Rd.
A range of speakers spoke at the event with ages ranging from 7 years old to 60 years old.
“It was great to see the community of Santa Clarita come together,” Taban said, “and celebrate something that brought everyone a little closer.”
