South Fire Holds At 175 Acres In Newhall Pass Near 5 Freeway, Evacuations Lifted

All forward progress of the South Fire has stopped, with containment at 85 percent and at least 175 acres still burning, according to Los Angeles County Fire officials.

South Fire Updates:

UPDATE 9:00 a.m. Monday morning. The South Fire is still holding at 175 acres burned, and Los Angeles County Firefighters have increased containment to 85 percent, according to LACoFD officials.

UPDATE 8:30 p.m. Los Angeles County Firefighters increased containment up to 75 percent, focusing on hot spots further away from residences, according to fire officials. All evacuations have been lifted.

UPDATE 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning: The South Fire has reached 175 acres with 50% containment. Crews will continue the work today.

UPDATE 8:10 p.m.: The South Fire has reached 170 acres with 30 percent contained. Evacuations have been lifted.

UPDATE 6:25 p.m.: The South Fire is holding at 160 acres with 35 percent containment.

UPDATE: 6:15 p.m.: The No. 3 and 4 lanes of the Northbound 5 Freeway will remain closed until 8:30 p.m.

UPDATE 5:45 p.m.: There are at least 200 homes threatened by the fire. Visit our South Fire evacuation story for the latest updates.

UPDATE: 4:30 p.m.: The South Fire has grown to at least 160 acres, according to fire officials.

UPDATE 4:00 p.m.: All streets south of Calgrove Boulevard are now under mandatory evacuations, the fire has reached 50 acres.

UPDATE 3:35 p.m.: Evacuations have been ordered on White Oak Court in Newhall, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

UPDATE: 3:25 p.m.: The brush fire has reached at least 20 acres in medium brush, according to fire officials.

UPDATE 3: 10 p.m.: The South Fire has grown to 10-12 acres, according to the LACoFD.

The blaze, dubbed the South Fire, quickly spread to at least two acres in medium brush fueled by light winds near the Northbound 5 Freeway at Calgrove Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

A second alarm as called to fight the brush fire, according to the LACoFD.

Multiple structures are threatened, according to fire officials.

The No. 3 and 4 of the bypass lane are closed on the Northbound I-5, according to CHP.
