Botulism is a rare form of life-threatening food poisoning caused by a toxin that attacks the body’s nerves.
The potentially fatal illness usually starts with weakness of the muscles that control the eyes, face, mouth and throat. This weakness may spread to the neck, arms, torso and legs.
Botulism also can weaken the muscles involved in breathing, which can lead to difficulty breathing and even death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of Thursday, there have been no consumer complaints or reports of illness related to this issue, according to the maker of Kraft Heinz Foods. But consumers in Santa Clarita and beyond are still encouraged to discard the cheese dip.
“We deeply regret this situation and apologize to any consumers we have disappointed,” said the company in a statement.
Kraft Heinz Foods announced that as a precaution, 7,000 cases of the queso in 15-ounce glass jars labeled with “best when used by” dates between December 27, 2018, and January 23, 2019, are being recalled.
The product with this description is the only one included in the nationwide recall.
“Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled,” the company said in a statement.
Kraft Heinz recommends that buyers do not eat the product, and return it to the store for an exchange or refund.
