Tampon Tax, Diaper Tax To End Until 2021 In California

A law that was signed in June which prevents California retailers, including in Santa Clarita, from taxing menstrual hygiene products and diapers went into effect at the beginning of 2020, officials said.

Senate Bill 92 was signed into law on June 27, 2019 by Governor Gavin Newsom. The bill took effect Jan. 1, 2020 and is expected to last until Dec. 31, 2021, according to lawmakers.

SB 92 states that all diapers manufactured for infants, toddlers and children, along with tampons, specified sanitary napkins, menstrual sponges and menstrual cups, cannot be taxed during this two-year period, the bill text reads.

Sellers of these items should not charge or collect sales or use tax on these items during this period, according to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.

Retailers who sell diapers and menstrual hygiene products are continuing to include sales of these items in their reported total gross sales on their sales and use tax returns, according to officials.

Santa Clarita residents who were taxed on these products on or after Jan. 1, 2020 can bring their receipt to the retailer with a copy of a notice from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.

For more information regarding this notice, call 800-400-7115. Customer service representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
