Two Storms To Bring Santa Clarita Rain, Possible Snow In Grapevine

Two storms could bring Santa Clarita rain and the possibility of snow in the Grapevine on the 5 Freeway this weekend, officials said.

Forecasters have predicted a storm moving into the Santa Clarita Valley starting Friday night, with another set to hit on Sunday, according to Lisa Phillips, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS).

“There are two more storms coming into that area,” said Phillips. “Starting Friday night, there is a possibility of light precipitation.”

The estimated rainfall is less than the last storms to hit Santa Clarita with .15 to .3 inches of rain in the forecast.

“This storm will not be as intense as last week’s storm,” said Philips. “But there is a potential for snow in the Grapevine.”

Starting Friday night, into Saturday morning, there is a chance of snow in the Grapevine, according to the NWS.

If snow sticks on the ground in the Grapevine, the California Highway Patrol could enact “Operation Snowflake,” which closes the 5 Freeway north of Castaic.

“Closures on the Grapevine, as well as other mountain roads, are designed to avoid a worst-case scenario and are based on road conditions as opposed to the experience level of individual drivers,” said CHP officials.

Typically, closures last from 4 to 6 hours, however, some may last longer than 24 hours, according to the CHP.

Another storm is set to hit Santa Clarita on Sunday, but with no prediction of snow in the area, said Phillips.

“The Sunday storm is the smallest out of the two,” said Phillips. “There is another possible storm on Wednesday, but looking ahead to the rest of the week, it should be pretty dry.”
