The break occurred shortly after noon on Thursday afternoon near the intersection of Bouquet Canyon Rd. and Newhall Ranch Rd. Southbound traffic is being diverted onto Newhall Ranch Rd, while all other traffic is being allowed to continue.
Carrie Lujan a spokeswoman for the city of Santa Clarita, said the road is expected to be fixed by about noon on Friday.
Public transportation is also being affected by the break. Santa Clarita Transit route 14 will be on a detour route until further notice. The bus stop at Bouquet/Newhall Ranch has been closed for the duration of roadwork. Riders are asked to plan on boarding at Bouquet/Espuella.
Route 502 is also affected, and cannot serve the stops at Southbound Bouquet/Newhall and Eastbound Soledad/Bouquet.
Fire Inspector Richard Licon said they received the call at 12:11 p.m. for flooding at Bouquet Canyon Road.
“It was dispatched as a broken water main,” he said. “The asphalt was rising up.”

By 1 p.m., the water had been shut down, leaving only a large sinkhole in the middle of the road. Crews on the scene said it was likely that no traffic would be allowed through until at least the next day.
Motorists trying to bypass the stop can make the right turn onto Newhall Ranch Rd. and turn left onto McBean Parkway. From there, they can either turn left on Valencia Blvd. or Magic Mountain Pkwy to return to Bouquet Canyon Rd.
