“Copious amounts of monsoonal moisture will continue to stream across Southwestern California through Thursday,” according to the report.

A National Weather Service official noted the flash flood watch that went into effect is a precursor to a warning, which was issued during Tuesday night’s storm for the Antelope Valley.

The warning isn’t atypical, but the weather conditions have pushed the thunder farther inland than usual.

“This is the typical time for it, but it’s typically a little farther east from us,” said Jayme Laber, hydrologist for the National Weather Service, who works in the Oxnard office for the NWS.

“It means if the conditions are met, if we get some thunderstorms, we could see flash floods,” Laber explained, noting it’s a caution at this time. “We have moisture, the humidity is up and during the daytime with this heat….”

The flash flood watch covers Santa Clarita and San Gabriel valleys, he added.

“There could be some brief heavy rains, maybe even small hail at time,” he added, “but it would be associated with those thunderstorms (by the coastal and mountain regions).”

Here’s the actual warning from the NWS:

…FLASH FLOODING POSSIBLE ACROSS MUCH OF INTERIOR SOUTHWESTERN

CALIFORNIA THROUGH THIS EVENING….

…FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM PDT THIS

MORNING THROUGH THIS EVENING…

The Flash Flood Watch continues for the San Gabriel and the Santa Clarita Valleys.

* From 11 AM PDT this morning through this evening

* Monsoonal moisture will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms to the area. Some thunderstorms may produce intense downpours which could lead to flash flooding.

Recommended actions

Flash flooding and debris flows will be a particular threat in and below the recently burned areas.

A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
