“Through the years, homeschool has, I think, just evolved in such a very unique way,” Urbina said during the latest “The Alex Urbina Radio Show” on KHTS. “There’s so many unique options to choose from.”

Erin Walker Acquaviva, an educational coach, homeschool facilitator and credentialed teacher, noted that homeschooling no longer only fits the image of children at home with their parents day after day, with limited opportunity for social interaction with other kids.

While this kind of “traditional” homeschool model is still an option for those that prefer it, Acquaviva described today’s homeschooling as an opportunity for parents to personalize their child’s learning with the help of tutors, learning centers, online programs and more.

“There’s so many opportunities for social (engagement) within the homeschool community, and so many, many communities that are being built around homeschool related to what different parents and families want to focus on in their home,” Acquaviva said. “It can work in so many different ways.”

For Acquaviva’s two children, her homeschool approach is centered around what she called “social-emotional growth,” with endless opportunities to explore their interests and strengths while utilizing the learning styles that best fit each of them.

Despite Acquaviva’s educational background, she found herself sharing many parents’ fear when she first decided to homeschool her children, but found that the support of tutors and a learning center that shares her passion for social-emotional growth made all the difference.

“I get to focus on what is my gift and my passion, which is really working with my own children on their emotional growth and personal growth, where other people work with them in the topics that they’re really great at, so it’s not all on me,” Acquaviva said. “Now some parents do the whole curriculum with their kids and they are comfortable with that and they feel great, and that’s also wonderful too.”

Urbina added that the personalized approach homeschooling allows for is his favorite part about this alternative to the public school system.

“You get an opportunity as the leader of your kids or leader of your family to be able to decide which course you want to put them in and how to direct them and which way, and put them in front of other experienced heroes in our community to be taught,” Urbina said. “That’s what I love most, is that you can custom design your own course for your kids to go through.”
