A mountain lion was spotted this weekend in Canyon Country. What should you do when faced with one?
While many animals hibernate during the winter season, mountain lions are always on the move and it is important to know what to do when encountering one.
Even though mountain lions generally avoid humans, they still make their way from the mountains and into the community. One Santa Clarita resident captured the moment a mountain lion circled his house.
While the homeowner and his pets were not harmed by the big cat, not everyone is as lucky and it is important to know what to do when face-to-face with a mountain lion.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has these tips for residents and hikers.
- Deer-proof your property to avoid attracting a lion’s main food source.
- Remove dense vegetation from around the home to reduce hiding spaces.
- Install outdoor lighting to make it difficult for mountain lions to approach unseen.
- Secure livestock and outdoor large pets in sturdy, covered shelters at night.
- Do Not Hike Alone: Go in groups, with adults supervising children.
- Keep Children Close To You: Observations of captured wild mountain lions reveal that the animals seem especially drawn to children. Keep children within your sight at all times.
- Do Not Approach a Lion: Most mountain lions will try to avoid a confrontation. Give them a way to escape.
- Do Not Run From a Lion: Running may stimulate a mountain lion’s instinct to chase. Instead, stand and face the animal. Make eye contact. If you have small children with you, pick them up if possible so they don’t panic and run. Although it may be awkward, pick them up without bending over or turning away from the mountain lion.

Thank goodness we don’t have them here. Not even in zoos. I think I’d trust a cheetah over one of these. Cheetahs were once domesticated. Never tamed. Just domesticated
Hate to say it, but its our own fault for these cats are showing up in residential areas now. We are building homes and businesses in their habitat. Its their land also.
Nowhere does it say you can’t give the big guy a saucer of warm milk and cuddles. That’s what I plan to do.
That sounds like a great idea,,,let us know how it works out for you…
