“The rain, flooding and debris flows destroyed and damaged structures, including homes and forced the closure of major highways and local roads,” said Antonovich, in a news release. “These conditions warrant that the county proclaim the existence of a local emergency to free up resources to support response and recovery efforts.”
If the Board of Supervisors approve the request, the proclamation will be forwarded to the Director of California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services for the Governor’s approval.
A flash flood warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Friday which states: strong and slow moving thunderstorms will bring the potential for very heavy rainfall with rates possibly to two inches per hour. These rainfall rates will bring the potential for flash flooding as well as mud and debris flows especially in the recent burn areas. The threat of additional heavy rainfall today could impact clean-up operations and force additional Road closures in this highly sensitive area.
Officials are warning that those living in or below the recently burned areas are urged to take the steps necessary to protect their property. Persons in the watch area should remain alert and follow directions of emergency preparedness officials.
