Andro Barsoum, 20, of Canyon Country, the driver of a black Honda Civic, collided with the rear end of a parked semi-truck early Wednesday morning, said Lt. Smith with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

The incident occurred on the northbound truck route near the I-5 and 14 freeway connector around 8:25 a.m. Wednesday, according to California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer, Sgt. Pack.

“Newhall CHP were called to a collision on the northbound I-5 to 14 truck route. Upon arrival it was discovered that there was a two vehicle collision between a black Honda Civic and tractor semi-trailer that was parked on the side,” said Pack.

Barsoum was the sole occupant of the vehicle and no one else was hurt in the crash, Pack said.

The incident is still under investigation.

  1. when i was driving truck, we have to dodge cars on the truck route all the time, so i called newhall c.h.p., and asked if they would start fining cars on the truck route, they said they couldn’t, but let a truck miss the truck bypass, and stay on the main roadway, see how fast the truck get ticketed. the cars have 5,or 6 lanes , and the truck route has 2, that is how the pileup in the s/b tunnel killed those people, by cars being on the truck bypass. cars are always cutting big trucks off, and i can’t imagine why more accidents don’t happen on the truck bypasses.

    • NEED A BIG RIG SNOOZE AREA and enforcement of no parking on freeway.
It is so sad someone was killed.
I wonder how frequently the truck drivers have a valid reason to stop and park their rigs as frequently as they do on the shoulder in certain spots like this one which appears to the be just before the exit to the Old Road off of the 14 Freeway. Auto drivers don’t have a choice about driving down that “truck route” if they plan to exit on the Old Road. I know the trucks are always there so I look out for them, but a moment of inattention meant death for this young man.
The CHP needs to start checking to see if truckers are treating that as a rest spot or have valid reasons for stopping. Its still on the freeway and as far as I know one is not allowed to just park there for fun or to take a potty break.
Another dangerous spot is on Sierra Hwy– parallel to the 14, just north of Newhall Ave. There is always a long line of big rigs parked there. Probably to get required sleep. Those huge trucks in a narrow shoulder are scary and dangerous to passing motorists — although I can’t say its illegal there— but it should be. Need enforcement.
The City perhaps need to create a big rig snooze area near the juncture of 14 and 5. Keep our truckers happy & awake and our auto drivers safe.

      • He might of been parked there because he ran out of drive time. And he was waiting to get some drive time back. A lot of truck drives don’t just park for the fun of it or just to sleep. Most of the time they run out of drive time. And when that happens they can’t move there trucks until they get some drive time back. They can’t drive 24 hours a day like a car can. They can only drive so many hours and then there down. I seen the wreck yesterday and it was bad and my heart goes out to the family. But it is posted that it’s a truck route and cars shouldn’t be able to drive on there at all. And the truck is 3 times bigger than the car, so the man driving the car should of seen him if he was parked. Or did the young man kill himself on purpose?

  2. We NEVER use the truck bypass – it’s for trucks not for passenger cars or motorcycles. People need to wake up and stop trying to save 2 or 3 minutes by using the truck bypass 🙁
