A local veteran is learning how to translate his skills as a former resource advisor in the U.S. Air Force to the film industry by participating in the veterans job training program at the Lifton Institute of Media Arts & Sciences (LIMS) in Castaic.

“I am in the production management program (at LIMS) and we handle all the budgeting, scheduling and logistics for film production,” said Zachariah Weideman. “(In the Air Force) I did budgeting for my squadron, which translated perfectly into what I’m doing now.”
The program offers 10 weeks of hands-on training with no cost up front, according to Weideman, who noted even paid employment as a production assistant wouldn’t match the level of experience gained at LIMS.

“We have full hands-on experience doing jobs that you never would be able to do as a PA starting out in the industry,” he said.
Like many veterans who have participated in the veterans job training program at LIMS, Weideman admitted he was skeptical when he first heard about it.
“I was very skeptical myself, because it seemed like one of those things that was too good to be true,” he said. “But now that I’m in the program, I’m actually even more impressed than my expectations, and it’s all turning out to be true.”
Those interested in everything from set construction to sound to camera operation to production management like Weideman can simply call LIMS to set up a tour and check it out for themselves.
“The person who is in charge of stunts, she’s a working stunt coordinator so she has great experience day to day on what’s happening currently in the industry,” Weideman said, “as well as great connections to help people get started in their careers.”

The Lifton Institute of Media Arts and Sciences, or LIMS, not only offers full-service movie studios Los Angeles filmmakers can use, but also doubles as a film production school. While LIMS students usually have never worked in the industry before, President Jimmy Lifton says that most people have skills that can be easily translated into the production trade. LIMS offers 10-week film production training and veterans job training programs designed to prepare students to go out and get a paid job on a movie or TV set.
