Company officials are anticipating doubling in size and are actively looking to add to their quality and production control departments, with adding talent to their CNC repair technician pool a priority.

Located in Valencia, FMI Aerostructures manufactures airframe components for both the commercial and defense industry, and is in need of machinists interested in starting a long-term career.

“I build parts for pretty much everything that flies, all the way from fighter jets to commercial 737s,” said Steve Wooten of FMI Aerostructures. “(It’s) absolutely satisfying because we support everything that this country involves regarding air superiority.”

FMI Aerostructures has been established in the Santa Clarita community since the 1970s, but the role of its machinists has changed drastically over the years with the evolution of technology.

Wooten noted that everything a person might remember learning in “machine shop” classes in junior high or high school is completely different today, with basic computer skills now a must for machinist positions.

“Now it’s automation, automation, automation,” Wooten said. “So our skill levels have changed a lot, and so we have evolved in how we approach people and how we approach those learning and training capabilities.”

A female-owned business, FMI Aerostructures is comprised of 250,000 square feet of building space and about 230 employees, most of whom have been with the company for more than nine years, and some whom have been a part of the FMI family for almost four decades.

With a full benefit package and a comprehensive training program designed to equip new hires with everything they need to be successful, FMI Aerostructures is seeking local applicants who are both smart and good with their hands, according to Wooten.

“We feel very, very strongly (about) hiring locally,” he said. “I don’t travel out of the Santa Clarita Valley, and I don’t want the people that work for me to have to travel out of the Santa Clarita Valley… So we’re looking for those people to get them off the freeway, let them work locally, live locally, shop locally and support the local economy and the community.”

Similarly, Wooten noted that the FMI Aerostructures management team believes in offering unparalleled support to their employees through a model not often seen with other large-scale employers.

“We believe very strongly in the people that work for us,” Wooten said. “We believe that those people are our business, and we revolve around them as opposed to them working for us. They are partners within our organization.”

Residents interested in applying for a position at FMI Aerostructures can begin the application process online, or even stop by the facility in Valencia to get started, according to Wooten.

“We’re going to give you a contact sheet, we’re going to set you up in an interview,” he said. “There’s a small amount of testing we do to look for your aptitude to see if this is something we think is going to be good for you and you’re going to be good for us and a good fit.”

Wooten continued, “Hopefully, we’re going to be able to bring you on board and put you within the training program and train you for a career that is very rewarding for a long-term basis.”
