The Way Out Recovery Rehab In Santa Clarita: What Happens After Reaching Out For Help

The Way Out Recovery Rehab in Santa Clarita is answering a common question many people struggling with substance use, or their loved ones, might be wondering: What happens after someone reaches out for help?

Bob Sharits, program director at The Way Out Recovery SCV, first noted that it is always okay for a loved one to reach out on behalf of someone who is struggling in an effort to get them the help that they need.

“This myth that I hear people say all the time is that we have to wait for a person to want it in order for them to get it,” Sharits said. “So a lot of times, families will sit back and they’ll say, ‘Well I’m not going to make the call. When you want it, you make the call.’”

While this approach is also okay, Sharits emphasized the importance of realizing that sometimes people are “too far gone” to make the call for themselves, and that success rates are the same for those who reach out for help themselves and those who come “kicking and screaming” because of a loved one.

“So the myth is that you have to want it, and the truth is that you have to do it,” Sharits said. “No matter how you get through the door, it’s okay. We will accept you any way you walk through the door.”

Melissa Flowers, a primary counselor at The Way Out Recovery SCV, said that the first question someone can expect to be asked during that initial phone call is whether or not the person struggling is still using and if they have ever gone an extended period of time without.

“A lot of people call for alcohol, for instance, and alcohol is very dangerous to come off of,” she said. “So depending on how long they’ve been drinking, how much they’re drinking, are they still currently drinking, they might not be appropriate for (our) level of care yet and they might have to go into a medical detox just for their safety.”

Next, The Way Out Recovery SCV staff will ask if the person has any mental health issues, which may have existed before their substance use or could have started afterward as well.

However, most people don’t tend to know if they have mental health issues when they start treatment, or if the symptoms they have been experiencing are related to their substance use, according to Flowers.

Once it is determined that the person is appropriate for The Way Out Recovery SCV’s program, a “multi-dimensional assessment” is conducted to consider not only physical and mental health, but also family, finances, legal issues, motivation for treatment, relapse potential and more, according to Sharits.

Then the treatment and recovery process is centered around helping participants stay clean and sober by teaching them the “necessary life skills” they need to handle the deeper issues that drugs and alcohol were covering, Sharits continued.

“Drugs and alcohol are a coping skill — that’s how we cope with life’s stressors, and now we don’t have that,” Flowers said. “So we have to develop new coping skills, healthy coping skills.”
