A Santa Clarita auto body shop owner is talking about a few New Year’s resolutions people can make to help them take better care of their cars, as well as offering 10 percent off services to anyone who mentions KHTS.

“I’ll discount my price 10 percent,” said Cesar Ranuschio of Body Shop 661. “I’ll beat anybody’s other rate and estimate by 10 percent if you come in.”

Resolution #1: Stay on top of oil changes.

Synthetic oil is designed to last longer than regular oil, particularly for newer cars, according to Ranuschio.

For instance, a newer BMW can last up to 15,000 miles and a newer Toyota can last up to 6,000 miles with synthetic oil, he said.

“But if you’re using the regular oil and it is an older car, then you should do it every 3,000 miles,” Ranuschio added. “It makes such a difference.”

Resolution #2: Wax your car regularly.

With Santa Clarita’s desert climate, Ranuschio emphasized the importance of waxing a car regularly to protect the paint.

“The paint has little pores, so if the pores are open, when it gets wet, the water gets into the pores,” he said. “If a bird poops on it, it gets in the pores. If you have wax on it, it covers all the little pores, and all the crust, the sap and stuff gets stuck on top of the wax and not the paint.”

Resolution #3: Wash bird excrement off your car immediately.

While it’s common for bird excrement to land on cars, Ranuschio noted washing it off immediately is vital to prevent damage to the paint.

“Its eats up the paint,” he said. “On some (car’s) paints, you see little round spots that look like they have little cracks or little pores — that’s because they left it on for too long and the acid from the stomach of the bird started eating the clear coat.”
