The Los Angeles County Fire Department received a report of a dog bite at about 10:10 a.m. Friday, on the 31000 block of Nichols Lane near Parker Road in Castaic, according to a spokesperson for the department.

“They both received facial injuries,” said the LA County Fire spokesperson.

The dog, described as an “80-pound pit bull mix,” was the family’s pet, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“The dog has been relinquished to Animal Care and Control,” said Miller.

The mother and infant are currently in unknown condition, officials said.

The two were transported to Northridge Hospital, due to the age of the child, according to fire officials.

  1. First, sincere wishes for recovery to both victims. Pit-bull was the breed I expected to see the dog identified as and so it was. With so many gentle loving dogs available to good homes, why go with this breed with its troubled history of attacking people? I enjoy dogs but never would have one of this type who can unpredictably and suddenly turn into monsters. Ban this breed w/in city limits for the safety of all. They do have a way of getting out and attacking and they do kill.

    • Im sorry but that is an ignorant statement, thats like saying all men are rapist just because they have the capabilities, I have owned pitbulls all my life and never once had a negative experience.

      • No. It’s a statistical statement.

      • I am a victim of pity bull attack in the city with children. They killed my 10 month old Boston terrier Fergie rose and attacked me as well permanent damage to my right hand and medical bills they have not apologized the dogs are missing this was their third attack. Pitts are unpredictable especially when their owners are narsarsistic and just. Don’t care. You have to live it experience the loss and pain to know this. They should be outside the city away from people and other animals they can be so dangerous belonging to the wrong people

    • It’s the owner not the breed.

    • Why pit bull breed? Does it really matter? A baby was injured! It sickens me to think that any breed of animal would harm a baby. Intentionally or not!! I have had many rescue Pitties who loved, protected and adored my children and grand children over the years. A dog is an animal and should be treated as such! But to pick a breed and use it and not the situation and/or animal is negligent and naive. Dauchsunds bite more people a year than pit bulls in America! Again, it doesn’t matter. Only the people matter right now!! Banning breeds is Negligent! Read and learn the facts!! All dogs are capable of biting and/or “turning”. Any animal is! and anyone who thinks they’re not shouldn’t have control over one. Spay, and neuter your animals. Train them to be what you need and want. My pitties have been a loving part of my life. Even though I have only rescued and never bought. If you can’t control them, then don’t get them. #pitties #my breed #dontbullymybreed #prayerstothefamily An animals life is never worth more than a human!!

      • National pit bull victim awareness has the attack sttistics.

      • naive is comparing a dachshund to a pit bull. And I don’t think a dachshund has ever killed a person, or required life flight, etc. . Pit bulls, on the other hand, have killed well over 200 people (and that’s not mentioning thousands who are disfigured and traumatized…plus pets and even livestock that are killed). You are ignorant. I’m sure this mother said the same thing you just did.

According to a friend of the family, and I quote, “The baby has a broken nose and extreme facial injuries (as does the mother) and will require plastic surgery”

        Also,
“The mother was getting a bottle to put the baby down for a nap. Nothing unusual. Just a normal day off for mom. The dog attacked the baby by grabbing the baby by the face and dragged her off the couch onto the floor. Mom got the dog off of the baby and put herself between the dog and baby and the dog turned on her. No loud noises, no yelling or crying. Nothing unusual. ”

Yes, all dogs are capable of turning and attacking, but not all are and on a reg basis. Pit bulls are

        .

        • Thanks for giving us the details. The news doesn’t seem to have any information on this. How horrible for the both of them.
My prayers to the entire family, yes including the dog who was probably loving to them at some point.

    • That’s right, with all the facts that matter when it come to pit bulls, there shouldn’t even be a debate. They should be banned Nationwide here in America.

    • Please educate yourself regarding American Pit Bull Terriers and Bully Breeds!!! They score higher on temperament tests than a Labrador! All dogs can attack.

    • I agree. I thought pitbull before even reading the rest of the article. I would never own one, or want to be around one. Sorry, I know there are many people who love this breed and constantly defend them, but there are too many incidents involving them. This was a family pet.

    • You do not know enough about pits or the reason history of this dog.

  2. There have been 225 children killed by pit bulls. I hope he/she is not the 226th. Keeping you in my thoughts little one.

  3. Please know that it is not the breed, rather the raising. Many pit mixes are kind sweet dogs. They are protective and were originally bred as nanny dogs to arch out for the children.

  4. I’m sorry all you pit bull lovers out there, but many of these dogs are wired for aggression. Most EVERY TIME I read about a dog attack, it’s involved a pit bull. How man Schnauzer or Pug attacks do you hear about? I’m just saying.

    • You don’t hear about them because you don’t want to. Chihuahuas and dachshunds bite more people than pit bulls in America every year. . #learnthefacts #adoptsontshop #knowledge. This is about a baby not a dog!! Humans are always more important than animals no matter what the species or breed. #Learnthefacts, ilovemypitties,

      • All dogs can bite. Would I take my grand babies to someone’s home who has a pit bull. Not a chance?

      • Chihuahuas and dachshunds don’t exert 600 pounds of force when they bite. I’ve yet to hear of either of these breeds killing people by biting them. Pit bulls are unpredictable; many of the attacks involve family pets that unexpectedly bit family members, including this case.

    • Right.. you don’t hear about Chihuahua bites because… does anyone care? They don’t do much damage BUT smaller breeds bite more it’s just not reported. There is always a reason for an attack. We don’t know the situation. Don’t blame the breed. Pit bulls used to be used as “nanny dogs” back in the day… they are protective, loyal and strong. Those qualities can be a blessing or a curse. There are a lot of bad humans out there but not all humans are bad.

  5. Here we go again! I KNEW when I saw the headline it was going to be a Pitt Bull! Didn’t you? Of course! What else would it be? ? Once again, we see what this dog is most famous for! Deny it all you want, but it’s NOT because owners make them that way! Duh!! They are so aggressive and that’s the way they ARE! As Denny said, and I fully agree—they should be BANNED! And it’s only a matter of time before it happens! How many more animals and people have to be mauled and killed because of this breed?? It’s insane not to take action and stop this madness! It is what it is, and it’s that simple!

    • Of course I knew it was a pit bull the article said so. Violence is Not what pit bulls are known for. That’s only how you know and/or think about them. I’ve had them around myself, children and grandchildren and have NEVER had a problem. They are loving and caring dogs. But that’s just it. They are dogs just like any other breeed. They are victims of Nature vs Nuture just like anyone else. Don’t blame a breed because of one animals actions. It’s a dog! As much as I love mine, they are dogs. Be responsible for your animals! I have had pit bulls for the last 30 years and Never has one bitten or been aggressive with anyone in my family!! But my golden Retriever has been. Did you hear or post about that? Don’t be naive! Educate yourself before you speak!! Ban Chihuahuas and Dauchsunds because they attack more people than pit bulls in America! Never mind. #dontbanthebreedbantheowners

      • They aren’t called “Pit Bulls” because they are sweet and cuddly. They were original bred to hold/fight bulls in a pit. You cannot love or train out genetics. Just like pointers point, collies herd, etc…, dog are bred for a purpose. They are NOT like every other dog. That’s why Chihuahuas aren’t used to herd sheep, or dachshunds aren’t used as water rescue dogs.

      • What you say is true. My friend had an Australian Shepherd dog with beautiful blue eyes. She asked me to watch him for a week and take him his food while they went on vacation. I had to distract the dog in one area in order to lay his food down, and then race into the garage door as I heard him running after me and growling. That dog wanted to kill me and I have no idea why. It’s not like I was a stranger. That dog was sweet and loving to them but hated me. Even though I was bringing food and trying to entice him with treats to get to know him.

    • Your an ignorant idiot keep your mouth shut you have no idea how dumb you sound. Its not the breed. You have no idea how it happened. The only problem is the owners not properly training or knowing their dogs limits. That’s the dog owners responsibility. The attack sucks but stop blaming the dog.

  6. Some pit bulls do attack, just like some other dogs do attack. I’ve been attacked 5 times in my life, NONE were pit bulls. But lucky for me, none resulted in serious injury, and a pit bull attack will almost always result in serious injuries…

  7. Make breeding pits illegal regardless of the bloodlines. Place a heavy fine on anyone caught breeding pit bulls raising pit puppies, put this in a separate fund and use this money to find real dogs homes. Pits are not dogs. People are safer with a wolf hybrid than a pit or pit cross!

  8. these pit bull propaganda people need to understand that there are about 3 million pit bull type dogs. Just because “ only” 26 people will be killed by them means 2 ,999,974 pit bull owners will say “ I never had a problem “ so there must not be one. Good grief, if a pug bites you it may or may not tear your pants. If a pitbull attacks you you may be killed. That is the point. Get it yet?

  9. Prayers for the mom n her ltll one.

  10. The problem is the mouths of pit bulls are genetically built to rip and tear. It is unfortunate, yes chihuahuas bite more but they aren’t built in a way that can do serious harm. It is also how they are trained and raised but it is ridiculous to write that chihuahuas or other dogs bite more it is the difference between BB guns and armor piercing bullets. I am not sure what the solution is but something should be done in regard to this type of breed.

  11. Pit bulls going pit, that’s what they do sometimes and no one knows which one will do it next. They can be loving one minute and the next, ripping your limbs off. They should be banned everywhere. Doesn’t matter how they are raised. You can put all your love into them and feed them the best food, if they decide to go pit on you or someone you love, you better hope someone is around to help you or them come out of it alive and fully intact.

  12. Hi everyone, I know the mother and daughter. They are both in the hospital right now. The dog just happen to snap that morning. The dog was never abuse or anything like that. However please do not blame the breed. I also have three pit bulls for years and never had a issue with my dogs.

    • Exactly. You just gave the best explanation why pits are not suitable as pets. “The dog just happened to snap” or as pit breeders say “turned on”. You cannot predict which pits will turn on and which ones never will. It’s genetic and nothing you do will prevent it. Not love. Not training. Not discipline. Not walking around on eggshells. Not PR by the pit bull lobby. Not tutus. Nothing. A pit will turn on when it turns on. And when it does it is not comparable to any other dog that bites. It mauls and kills and that is an unacceptable risk to society. Enough! BSL now.

People need to learn that digs are not humans. Dogs are bred for specific genetic characteristics. Humans are not. Stop this nonsense of thinking people are dogs. It’s insulting and ignorant.

  13. Wow some of you people are seriously out of control. “Ban the breed” are you serious??? Shit next it’s hey let’s ban all Hispanics or blacks because some of them like to rob places. Seriously, quit assuming stuff. You don’t know this dog mental conditions nor do you know the condition of the household it was in. I have two pit bulls myself and both those dogs are the most kindest dogs I’ve ever had. Sometimes it could just be that dog or the whole breed.

  14. Two more people used as ‘test dummies’ to determine if a pit is vicious. If you can’t test shampoo on animals, why are people used to test if pits are vicious. Owning a pit is BARBARIC!!! Completely uncivilized.

  15. Just reading these ignorant comments about all pit bulls being dangerous is similar towards people judging books by their covers. I own pit bulls as well and they’re very loyal dogs to have around me and my family. If these people are taking care of their pit bulls right, then they are not going to bite the hands that feed them. There’s more to this story that is being revealed and just using the pit bulls as scapegoats.

  16. As I read the remarks FEAR is the driving factor. Most breeds of large dogs have been villains in the media. Dobermans, German shepherds, sharpei’s ,Rottweilers,, Pit bulls, and even the local neighborhood coyotes. Fear!! Alcohol and drunk drivers kill more babies and people than pit bulls but as you know they did end prohibition some time ago. Banning the dog is a death sentence for thousands of innocent animals that have zero to do with this headline. Dogs are becoming a key part of everyone’s daily life. They are therapy dogs, service dogs, police dogs, military dogs, seeing eye dogs, illness sensing dogs, the list is endless and the pit bull is no exception. They are wonderful loving kind dogs when trained correctly. This goes for any dog. I learned a long time ago the truth is somewhere in the middle and none of us were there but the mom. SHE will of course have her version. Sadly there isn’t no voice for the dog and the dog is going to loose it’s life over this. I’m so grateful mom and baby are ok but there is more to this story. Something triggered the dog and the dog may have felt the child was in danger and trying to get it away from it. We will never know and we can all assume. But please don’t need let fear get in the way of no one actually knows what happened or why and the truth will sadly die with the dog. There will be enough no jury or fair trial just a needle to the arm. Please neighbors let’s be tolerant and compassionate

  17. These animals do not need to be in our communities…the statistics speak for themselves and ive been a part of his discussion and active daily experiences in my community for 32 years…dealing with animal bite reports for the health dept……nearly half of 700+ are reported as pit bulls which represent a small portion of the dogs…and also the major dog in shelters….and whu is that..its their nature…sure all dogs cam be loving but the risks do jot outweigh the need for joy from a pecidic breeds and if their isnt a training component required for these digs then its rediculous to have these as pets….thanj you michael vick for the bleeding hearts who have won the minds of America that we need to keep and save every one….care for the child and the dog will be well cared for…..

  18. Both parents (assuming there are 2) should be arrested for felony stupidity.

  19. Thank God the Pitbull in this case attacked only his own family and not some innocent being outside the family. All I can say is GOOD!!! Now does the family want to go out and get another one. Bless their Hearts!!!!! Let the parent now be charged with Child Endangerment. Prosecute the cases as they happen!!!!

  20. It’s so crazy to hear these pit bull owners say well our pit bull has never bit anyone ! Yet key word !! It only takes once to kill or ruin someone’s life. Come on 80% of the time you hear of a dog harming someone it’s always a pit! Why you think gangsters always have pits ? It’s not for their sweetness! It’s just unbelievable to even debate this and just Russian rulait to own one.
