Strong Winds Close Schools, Result In PSPS Outages In Santa Clarita

Strong winds have triggered Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS), closing schools and leaving traffic lights dark.

Several areas in the Santa Clarita Valley and across Los Angeles County are currently within Southern California Edison’s (SCE) PSPS zones.

Thursday, SCE began issuing public safety power shutoffs throughout the Santa Clarita Valley, affecting homes, businesses, and traffic lights due to strong Santa Ana winds and elevated temperatures.

Public Safety Power Shutoffs occur when an electric utility temporarily shuts off power to reduce the risk of equipment sparking a fire. Fire weather conditions such as heavy winds, dry vegetation, and low humidity impact the decision to implement a PSPS.

As of this article’s publication, public safety power shutoffs affect 34,974 Edison customers across L.A. County, with an estimated 68,194 customers under consideration.

As a result of the PSPS, multiple schools in the Santa Clarita Valley have been closed, according to district officials.

Schools that are closed include:

William S. Hart Union High School District

  • Golden Valley High School

Bowman High School, Sequoia School, Sierra Vista Junior High School will be letting out students at lunchtime.

Sulphur Springs Union School District

  • Valley View Elementary
  • Leona Cox Elementary
  • Canyon Springs Elementary

And the District Office.

Newhall School District

  • McGrath Elementary School
  • Wiley Canyon Elementary School

Outside Santa Clarita, large areas are also experiencing power outages in Palmdale and Ventura County.

Resource centers are available to support SCE customers during PSPS.

  1. All because Edison won’t spend money to upgrade their power lines so we suffer through these ridiculous shutdowns

  2. This is all garbage. Here in SCV we have had winds much stronger and more consistent and the power has not been shut off in such a wide spread of neighborhoods. This is SCE and the state of CA not doing their jobs. The grid is still not sufficient, the lands around are power poles and frames are not kept clear enough and of course, in open land our stupid Governor and his cronies won’t clear brush and dead trees. Again, we are not supposed to be living in a 3rd world country. This is not all about fire danger.

  3. Third world country
