Mark and Jerri Jorgensen from Desert Solace discuss their own journey through pornography and sex addiction recovery, and the importance of recovery.

“The idea of pornography itself has been around as long as there have been images,” said Mark Jorgensen, founder of Desert Solace.

According to Mark Jorgensen, his addiction to pornography first started in the 1970s when he and his friends were looking at a Playboy magazine and persisted through the rest of his life. It took confrontation from a close friend much later in life for Mark Jorgensen to come to terms with his own addiction and attend an inpatient treatment program.
“Sometimes the spouses or even the family members get overlooked,” said Jerri Jorgensen, co-founder of Desert Solace. Jerri Jorgensen advocates for the recovery of everyone affected by addiction, including the people closest to the addict.
Jerri Jorgensen stood beside her husband as he struggled with his addiction, and recognized the importance of her own recovery when it came to saving their marriage.
The founders of Desert Solace stated that because of the shame associated with pornography and sex addiction many people get trapped in their addiction.
The officials from Desert Solace treatment center discussed the rising divorce rates and how porn and sex addictions can contribute to the dissolution of marriages. When a spouse learns about their loved one’s addiction it can be quite traumatic, according to Desert Solace.
When addressing spouses and family members, Jerri Jorgensen said: “I would invite them to get their own recovery. It is critical because it is a family dynamic.”
The Jorgensens recognize that many people dread the idea of recovery. “There is a lot of joy in recovery,” said Jerri Jorgensen. According to the Jorgensens the joy is because the client is improving their life and relationships.
