Supervisor Kathryn Barger Named Board Member Of South Coast Air Quality Management District

Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger was sworn in Friday as the newest member of the South Coast Air Quality Management District Governing Board, replacing Supervisor Janice Hahn as the County of Los Angeles’s representative.

Barger was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in November 2016 and currently serves as its chair. She represents the Fifth District which includes 22 cities and 70 unincorporated communities in the San Gabriel, San Fernando, La Crescenta, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys.

“I look forward to working on the South Coast AQMD Governing Board on efforts to improve air quality for our communities across the region,” said Barger.

Barger began her career in public service as a college intern in the office of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and rose to become his chief deputy in 2001, where she served until her election to the Board of Supervisor.

She is an advocate for the environment and efforts to preserve open space, enhance parks, trails, recreational programs and facilities, as well as libraries and after-school programs to serve local communities, according to officials.

Committed to transportation and air quality issues, Barger led efforts to improve mobility by securing over $200 million in federal funding for the I-5/SR 14 interchange and championed extending the Metrolink’s Gold Line rail access to airports for shorter travel times, according to the organization.

South Coast AQMD is the air pollution control agency for Orange County and major portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties, including the Coachella Valley
